Norman
Lecture Series to present Cora
McHenry
Dr.
Cora McHenry, president of Shorter
College in North Little Rock and a
former member of the Arkansas Tech
University Board of Trustees, will
speak on Thursday, April 24, as part
of the Norman Lecture Series at
Arkansas Tech.
McHenry’s presentation
is entitled “An Evolutionary Walk
Through Education.” The event will
begin at 7 p.m. in Ross Pendergraft
Library and Technology Center Room
300. There will be a reception in
the library’s third-floor lobby at 8
p.m. The public is invited to
attend.
McHenry has served as
president at Shorter College since
May 2002. Previously, she served as
executive director of the Arkansas
Education Association, where she was
the first African-American female to
head a state affiliate of the
National Education Association.
In April 1977, McHenry
became the first female and the
first minority to serve on the
Arkansas Tech Board of Trustees. She
was a member of the board through
1982.
Her
influence on the Tech campus
continues today through the Cora
McHenry Scholarship for Teaching
Excellence, which is a competitive
tuition scholarship awarded to
minority students who demonstrate a
commitment to teaching in Arkansas
public schools.
McHenry’s community involvement
includes serving as the chairperson
for the Daisy Gatson Bates Holiday
Committee, a position she was
appointed to by Gov. Mike Beebe on
Feb. 18, 2008.
